Memory is not the greatest but I do believe we had to get underway on short notice and we sailed from Pearl Harbor to the area of Midway. I do believe we were able to set foot on Midway but only for one day. The year? About 1981?

I lived here for 3 years. My dad was stationed there. My mom had just gotten out of the Army and was free to be there with her family. I have good memories about Midway, plus I still have a couple of pictures. Thanks so much for posting this clip!! There weren't that many birds there in 1961!!!

See Japan still wants Midway, it was a successful landing. Yamamoto would have been proud. Just kidding !!! During my Navy days I flew commercial from LAX, to Narita. It was a long flight Most of the passagers were Japanese and we got along. The in flight movie was Coming to America with Eddie Murphy and was fun to watch with our fellow passagers. It's still a good memory.

Cool diversion place

Quite the story. Shame the passengers weren't able to do any exploring. In 1991 I was on a military charter flight from Guam to Hawaii and our plane had to divert to Majuro in the Marshall Islands due to an oil leak. We were there about 12 hours. Majuro is a small atoll but not compared to Midway.

Wow! That was fascinating. The island, airport and runway is intact and in good condition. You can now book a trip to Midway Island from Hawaii.

We landed there on an emergency while flying in a C5. Had to stay 3 days. The gooney birds are the culprit to this planes damage as they fly all over the place. I was there in 1990. It was the Navy's then and had a small contingent there at that time.

Been there during the early 80's. Knew men that served there when families were permitted. The Gooney Birds and Fairy Turns are amazing. The waters incredible. Filled with history.

I lived on Midway as a child in 1970-1972. I remember Rusty Bucket where all the old wreckage was gathered on the island. I also went to George Gannon School for 4th and 5th grade. My dad was a Chief air control man. I loved going beachcombing with my dad looking for fish balls. I remember playing softball there as well. We use to go to the NCO club and watch movies at night. Wish I could go back and visit again.
